Before Anesthesia

What to expect before intravenous anesthesia sedation:

  • Do not eat or drink anything, 8 hours before surgery.  Failure to do so will result in rescheduling your appointment.
  • Take all prescribed medications with the smallest amount of water (the only exception).
  • If you are prescribed antibiotics preoperatively you should take them one hour prior to your appointment time with the smallest sip of water only.
  • You must bring a responsible adult over 18 years of age with you.  This person will need to stay in the office during your procedure, drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours after your surgery.  You will not be able to drive for 24 hours following surgery.
  • Bring your inhaler if medically prescribed.
  • A parent or guardian must accompany you if you are under 18 years old.
  • Wear comfortable, loose fitting, short-sleeved clothing, no jewelry or fingernail polish.
  • Do not smoke for 72 hours prior to surgery.
  • If you are prescribed Ativan (Lorazepam) preoperatively and you take the pill(s) before your appointment, you cannot drive yourself to your appointment nor can you drive for the next 12 hours.
